Dr. Joseph Ting, a clinical investigator, is dedicated to advancing neonatal health through research and clinical excellence. As a Staff Neonatologist, he provides specialized care for high-risk infants, including those born at the threshold of viability, those with congenital heart disease, and those requiring surgical and multidisciplinary interventions. His clinical expertise is complemented by a prolific academic record, with over 160 peer-reviewed publications, more than 100 conference proceedings and three book chapters.  

Education and Career:

Dr. Ting received his medical degree and paediatric residency training at the University of Hong Kong in 2006, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Infectious Diseases (2007) and a Master of Public Health in Medical Statistics (2009). He completed his Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2013, which included a six-month advanced training placement in Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography at the University of Toronto. He later earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD, research) in neonatal infection and antimicrobial stewardship in 2021, and a postgraduate certificate in Safety, Quality, Informatics and Leadership (SQIL) from Harvard University in 2024.

Following his fellowship, Dr Ting was appointed as a Staff Neonatologist at BC Women’s Hospital, Vancouver BC, Canada. In 2017, he was promoted to Clinical Associate Professor of Paediatrics at UBC. In 2021, he was recruited to the University of Alberta as a tenured Associate Professor, holding an endowed Variety, the Children’s Charity, and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Professorship

Research Interests:

Neonatal infection & antimicrobial stewardship, neonatal haemodynamics, and long-term health outcomes of at-risk infants.

Training:

Dr. Ting has been deeply committed to mentoring and supervising trainees, including 4 graduate students & post-doctoral research fellows, 14 postgraduate clinical trainees (3 Pediatric residents, 1 Family Medicine resident, 10 Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellows) and 15 undergraduate trainees (11 medical students, 4 science students) in their research work.
